I want the IDE debugger to break when a particular variable is read from or written to. Is this possible?

This functionality is only available on some platforms and unfortunately, the IDE might not be clear about this, it just won't work. If you want to try it, right click in the debugger's breakpoints view and there is an 'add watchpoint' option.
