We have a 14 node QNX4 network which seems to be generating a lot of traffic when there is very little going on with the system. Different machines are locking up. The machines all have their own hard-drives and boot independantly so any of them can be up at any time, or any down. Each machine has nameloc running on it, could this be our problem? If so, then we need some advice on how to ensure that at least one machine on the network is running nameloc?

Solution |
Running 14 namelocs is the reason you are seeing a lot of network traffic and probably why the machines are crashing. From the entry for nameloc in the QNX OS Utilities Reference -- N to Z: You may run nameloc on up to 10 different nodes in the network - this provides redundancy in case a node running nameloc fails. Note, however, that running nameloc on just 3 nodes is usually more than sufficient. Each nameloc generates background network traffic, so the numbers of namelocs should be limited.
