Issue |
While trying to install QNX4.X on a new Pentium II 450 MHz there seems to be a problem booting. Segment violations and obscure error messages appear on the console when trying to mount the floppy drive as /.
Is there a problem installing this version of the QNX RTOS on fast pentiums?

Solution |
Yes, the problem is not with the computer. It is a timing problem with the floppy controller. There is not a large enough window being allocated for floppy access during the install. Once the OS is installed on the hard drive, floppy access is not as intense and there will likely be no problem.
A few solutions to try are: ---------------------------
A. Adjust some BIOS settings to slow the machine down. For example, disable any shadow caching or any optimization that can be found. Then once QNX4 is installed, re-enable the BIOS optimizations, which will not affect booting off of the hard-drive.
B. Install the 4.X OS onto the hard disk while its in a slower machine, then put the hard-drive into the faster machine and boot it.
C. Install the 4.X OS onto a slower machine. |
