Issue |
Are there any issues with ISA network cards locking up fast Pentiums running QNX4?
Testing has shown that sudden lock-ups occur with no indication why. We have tested both QNX versions 4.24 and 4.25 with ethernet cards 'Ethernet/ne/1000/2000'. The systems are a SIEMENS RACK-PC 850, PIII. We also experience similar symptoms on HP 450Mhz and 550MHz boxes. Rebooting the systems temporarily solves the problem.

Solution |
There are hardware issues relating to lockup problems on fast Pentiums.
Feedback from HP indicates that PCI cards are the solution to this problem.
Feedback from Corman, networking experts and network card vendors, indicates that lockup problem could be due to the ISA bus frequency. This value could normally be changed from the BIOS, however the HP VL boxes had minimal BIOS settings and the ISA frequency option was not there. Regardless of the ISA bus speed, Corman did agree that using ISA cards on Pentiums is a common cause for lockups on any OS.
Internally, the QNX experience is that any/all drivers which support ISA adapters may have problems in faster machines due to incompatabilities of the ISA bus architecture on newer machines. Most newer machines violate ISA bus timing (via the PCI chipsets) by overclocking the ISA bus leading to hard lockups with many older ISA drivers and cards.
